The Boss has asked me to share this true event with you, so my reporting skills are exPandad and purrfected.
Something’s out there!
Three weeks old. All four of us were happy and safe, napping in a little pile under the Boss’s old deck. Of course, I was already the best napper. Mom [Marina], is a small, very smart cat. She had returned from a successful hunt and was settling around us, her curving back blocking the draft from the small opening. Faint noises outside seemed far away.
Scuffling, scratching, rustling sounds had grown louder and were now coming from the other side of the deck. Something was out there! Mom softly mewed and told us to move to the back corner and not to make a sound. She got up crouching low and slowly made her way to the opening.
Even though it was quite dark under the deck there was a bright moon lighting the opening; a long shaft of moonlight flooded into the space where we huddled.
Wide awake, I looked at my siblings; everyone’s fur was all puffy and their eyes were huge. For the first time in our short lives, we were all scared!
A digging sound, with more scuffling and a sound like something stomping! Whatever was out there was also growling and grumbling. Mom was silent, waiting in the dark near the opening. Suddenly, a dark shape blocked the entrance. Mom started yowling and hissing.
The shape also was hissing and squealing as it tried to push inside. Then we heard it smacking its lips! Yikes! We were pawsatively freaked out!
Mom was very brave and seemed to grow larger, yowling fiercely and blocking the entrance. Without warning the whole place was pewy! Mom was gagging but ran out, clawing at the intruder until it finally went away.
It was daylight before she came back: reeking and very pewy, her eyes red and full of tears, she mewed for us to come and drink. Turned out the dark shape was a skunk and mom got sprayed up close, right in her face! She had spent the night walking through the dewy grass in the field by the Boss’s house to try and wipe off the sticky skunk spray soaked into her fur. It had helped enough for her to feed us, and then carefully wash each of us clean of any sticky spray that transferred while we drank. Then she left again and walked the field, doing that twice a day for a week until all the sticky, smelly spray was gone. The Boss knew what had happened and had tried to help mom get clean, but mom prefurred to do it her way.
Marina is pawsatively the best mom ever! Thanks mom. I get my awesomeness and bravery from you.
PS. Both my sisters, Marina Mow Mow and Elaina Sweetpea now have kittens of their own! I am officially Uncle Panda. Hmmm. Not sure what to think at this point.
